Sun., May 26:  The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar  (1968, 49 min., Can., PG) This NFB production, winner of 8 Canadian Film awards including Best Picture, is the story of an itinerant bush worker and his large family, living in a logging community in an isolated rural area of the Ottawa Valley. See teen-ager Margot Kidder in her first film. Two additional films from the NFB, Pies (1983, 12 min.) and Painting a Province (1963, 22 min.) will be shown as well. Pies is an animated film about a conflict between neighbours in rural Saskatchewan over a cow and its by-product. Painting a Province features NB artists Alex Colville, Jack Humphrey, Miller Brittain, Fred Ross, sculptor Claude Roussel and artist-teacher Lawren Harris. Preceded by a very brief AGM of the film society.

Mon., June 10:   Young Mr. Lincoln (1939, 100 min., US, rated G, English subtitles) Henry Fonda gives one of the finest performances of his career, as the young president-to-be, struggling with an incendiary murder case as a novice lawyer. Directed by John Ford, this is an indelible piece of classic American cinema.

Mon., June 24:  Chinatown  (1974, 130 min., US, rated R, English subtitles) Roman Polanski’s classic mystery has evolved into a landmark film, with Jack Nicholson as the sharp-tongued private eye hired by Faye Dunaway to investigate her cheating husband. This routine case of adultery quickly becomes a tangle of deceit, corruption and treachery.

Mon., July 8:  Machuca (2004, 115 min., Chile/Sp/UK/Fr, PG, English subtitles) Released to widespread acclaim and controversy in Latin America, this coming of age story explores the 1973 coup in Chile through the eyes of a pair of 12 year old boys who form an unlikely friendship as politics rip their world apart.

Mon., July 22:  Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011, 82 min., Japan, PG, English subtitles) This documentary is a thoughtful and elegant meditation on the life of 85 year old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world's greatest sushi chef.  His 10-seat sushi bar in a Tokyo subway station was awarded a prestigious three-star Michelin Guide rating, drawing sushi lovers from around the globe. A chronicle of Jiro's life as a perfectionist and as a loving yet complicated father.
